Treament- VIZA 612 Final Project

Final Update: 4/30/06

  • Details: This idea was born for an earlier project and the narrative aspect has been taken out of it. The idea is to try and gain continuity through movement- namely a characters distinct movement in a game. The main idea is to synch a real person with a video game character via movement and camera movement. The games I am using are Mario, Legend of Zelda, and Okami. The first two games were chosen for their popularity so that they are familiar to most people, even if they aren't avid gamers, and the last game (Okami) was chosen for it's special characters, style, and movement. I chose games that range from old simple well known simple to completely new and dynamic.

Characters from each of these games have distinct movements: Link from Legend of Zelda is a sprite and has very few movements in very few positions so I used film cut so that the actor is not seen going into the motions or movements of this character. In Mario the movement is a bit more smooth, less sprite like despite being a sprite, and has more of a range of motion. In Okami the character is more fluid, and we are able to see more of the character other than only a profile or front view as in Mario or Zelda and the camera has a lot more movement and dynamic shots.

  • Method/Details: I wanted to use continuity of motion as my main theme in this project. I like the idea of linking two very different things via motions they make as opposed to form. In this case I am linking a game character with a person via the character/persons actions and movements as well as the movement of the camera. I will also link the colors of the video in the real world to that of the game world, giving it a more "toon-ish" feel to the environments.
